Aqualyx® Side Effects and Recovery: What's Normal, What's Not

If you’re researching Aqualyx® side effects, you probably want a calm, honest answer, not dramatic promises or vague reassurance. So let’s talk about what you may notice after treatment, how long recovery usually takes and when you should contact your clinic.
At D’ALK Aesthetics, we provide personalised aftercare instructions at every appointment.
Because knowing what to expect makes the whole experience feel much easier.
Why do Aqualyx® side effects happen?
Aqualyx® is a targeted body contouring treatment designed to break down the membranes of fat cells in a selected area. Your body then gradually clears the treated cellular material through its natural processes.
That process can involve a local inflammatory response. In plain English? Some reaction is expected. It doesn’t automatically mean anything has gone wrong.
The response varies depending on:
The treatment area
The amount treated
Your individual skin and body response
Whether you’ve had previous treatment in the same area
Your general health and suitability
Aqualyx® can be used for areas such as the lower abdomen, flanks, hips, inner thighs, knees and chin, subject to consultation.
What side effects are normal after Aqualyx®?
The most common effects are local and temporary. You may notice:
Swelling
Redness
Tenderness or soreness
Firmness or a slightly tight feeling
Warmth around the treatment area
Bruising at some injection sites
Swelling typically reaches its highest point during the first 24–72 hours. This is often the stage when clients feel most aware of the treatment area, especially if the chin, abdomen or flanks have been treated.
It should then gradually settle.

How long does Aqualyx® recovery take?
For many people:
Swelling and tenderness improve noticeably within 3–7 days
Some areas may remain slightly firm or swollen for a little longer
Bruising can take 1–2 weeks to fade
Recovery time varies according to the treatment area, your skin tone and your individual response
Skin of colour can show redness or bruising differently, which is one reason we avoid rigid promises about exactly how your recovery will look. Your experience is personal, and that’s perfectly normal.
What can you do to support recovery?
Your aftercare advice will be explained at your appointment, but general guidance may include:
Drink water regularly
Keep gently moving rather than remaining completely still
Avoid alcohol for a short period, as it may worsen bruising or swelling
Avoid strenuous exercise for the time advised by your practitioner
Avoid unnecessary heat exposure while the area remains swollen or red
Follow your written aftercare instructions carefully
Gentle movement may support normal lymphatic drainage, but this doesn’t mean you should massage or manipulate the area unless your practitioner specifically advises you to.

When should you contact the clinic?
Most post-treatment effects are mild and settle with time. However, contact the clinic straight away if anything feels severe, spreads, becomes increasingly painful or worries you.
You should also report possible signs of infection, such as:
Redness that continues spreading
Increasing warmth and pain
Pus or unusual discharge
Fever or feeling generally unwell
Severe swelling that doesn’t begin to improve
These complications are uncommon, but you should never feel you have to guess. If you’re concerned, ask.
Why does the consultation matter?
Aqualyx® isn’t suitable for everyone. Certain medical conditions, allergies, skin concerns and medications, including some blood-thinning medicines, may affect whether treatment is appropriate.
That’s why your journey begins with a suitability assessment and a free 15-minute telephone consultation. We discuss your health history, treatment goals and the area you want to target before recommending anything.
At D’ALK Aesthetics, treatment is performed by a qualified and insured pharmacist practitioner who has been performing fat dissolving treatments since 2021. We use a CE-marked, MHRA-compliant product and take a careful, personalised approach to planning.
Aqualyx® is a body contouring treatment, not a weight-loss shortcut. Results vary, and suitability is always subject to consultation.
The takeaway
Swelling, tenderness, warmth, redness, firmness and some bruising can be normal after Aqualyx®. Swelling often peaks within 24–72 hours, while most discomfort settles over 3–7 days and bruising may take up to two weeks.
The sensible approach is simple: understand the expected recovery, follow your aftercare, and contact your clinic if anything feels severe, spreading or unusual.
